Herscher Christian Church
Embracing Growth, Relevance and Change
Established in 1979 through the church planting guidance of the Chicago District Evangelistic Association (CDEA), a local group of Christians from the Herscher, IL area began meeting in homes of some of these nucleus members. On February 2, 1980 the members of the Herscher Christian Church began meeting at the Herscher Community Center (now the Village Hall). Our Mission and Vision Statements reflect the purpose we seek to fulfill (see Home Page).
On March 16, 1986 land was purchased for the purpose of building a new church home located next to and east of the State Bank of Herscher at 30 Tobey Drive. Construction began in September of 1987, and the building was completed on June 26, 1988. The church has continued to worship in that building since its completion.
The mission of the independent, non-denominational, fundamentalist, evangelistic congregation is to share the love of God with all people, everywhere. In early 2004, the leadership met in a planning session seeking ways to innovate and improve effectiveness, and to meet the needs of this broad mission focus. The recommendation was to expand the building facilities for a wider range of needs. It was accepted by the membership in a spirit of enthusiastic unity, and the Planning Phase began.
In the spring of 2005 the church began Phase I of a building program to provide a larger, more flexible facility for the congregation to serve the Herscher Community. Work on the approximately 8000 Sq Ft multi-purpose Sanctuary/Gymnasium began in the spring of 2005. The first formal Worship Services were held in the new facility on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006. Building Dedication was on May 7, 2006.
This addition provides an activity area for the growing youth program, and a larger sanctuary for the growing congregation. Phase II is presently being planned to convert the original facility into a flexible classrooms/fellowship area. The lighthouse beside the sign next to the drive entrance is there as a symbol to remind us the purpose of Herscher Christian Church is, not to be a landmark, but to show the way.
