Crazy Love Series Sermon #1
Tyson Graber, Herscher Christian Church
February 13, 2011
I would like to start today by speaking just to the guys for a moment. So ladies if that is ok with you, you can think about something else for just a moment.
Guys are you listening? I want to save you a lot of stress and worry this week so listen very closely. For many of you, the information I am about to share with you could save you much grief.
Whether you are prepared or not, tomorrow is Valentines Day! Do you know what to do? We have to help each other with these sorts of things.
OK, ladies, you can begin to listen again. But seriously, we are in the ‘love month.’ and many of you know what that is all about, because you are sitting here today with your sweat-heart.
Have you seen anyone bitten by the love bug lately. This time of the year is when you see it the most, I think. You know those couples who are crazy about each other. Sometimes its sweet and you can’t help but watch, and sometimes its down right scary and you can’t look away fast enough. When you run across those couples who are Love Crazy because the Love Bug has bitten, be careful, because it can make them do things you wouldn’t normally do.
How many of you have ever witnessed a young man or young lady acting crazy because of love? Most of you know what it looks like.
I know it from first hand experience.
Many of you know that I fell hard for Tiffani from the first time I laid eyes on her, and you know the difficult part about that was we were forbidden to have a normal dating relationship.
Just a few weeks after meeting her, I started acting little crazy and doing things that seemed even strange to me. Like, when I choose to tell her that, “I like you, but I can’t date you or be in a romantic relationship with you, but when my internship is over I would like to pursue a relationship with you. Good Night.” Then, I turned around, got into my car and drove off thinking, “Now that was nuts!”
This took place this very month of 1999, and my internship was set to last from that time until October — a full 10 months! Those months were a great time of learning, but at the same time, difficult, because I wanted to pursue a relationship with Tiffani, but I could not.
Yet, for some strange reason, during that summer in 1999 on a youth group trip with the church to Great American I recorded a song for Tiffani in one of those cheesy recording studios onto a cassette tape and gave it to her and just told her to listen to it.
[Dustin accompanied on guitar as Tyson sang the chorus of George Strait song, “I Cross My Heart” to Tiffani]
Now, you are probably thinking that is crazy..., and it was. We were not in a relationship, I wasn’t even sure how much she liked me, and I recorded this love song for her. Talk about Crazy. What guy in his right mind does that? A guy who wants a girl to know that he wants a relationship. Call me crazy, but in some strange way I believe it helped.
Did it make sense? No! Would I advise other young men to do something similar for a girl you are not in a relationship with? By No Means!
In much the same way, well before you could have ever pursued a relationship with God, He set out to show you His Radical and Crazy Love for you!
Jeremiah 1:5 Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.
Psalms 139:13-14 For you created my inmost being, you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
But even in a more extreme way, God expressed His love for us by sending His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to die that you might live.
In my opinion, this completely and fully reveals to each of us just how Crazy God is about you. HE LOVES YOU MORE THAN YOU CAN UNDERSTAND.
How could this be? How could a Father ever be willing to sacrifice His only son for you? Why would He do this? I know I would not sacrifice even one of my boys for one of you, even all of you. I don’t think I could bring myself to it, but God did.
Talk about a crazy love, it’s a love that is difficult to put into perspective. Even Jesus wondered about it with perfect intentions at the time, ‘...is this really the only way? Isn’t there another way we can save these people from their sins?’
READ Matthew 26:36-44
What is this cup? Is it just the cross? No, it is much more than that.
It was the sin that Jesus was looking to avoid, because when He who was sinless chose to take on that sin ..., all of the sin ever committed ..., the Father could have nothing to do with Him, and Jesus knew that. It was because of all that sin that Jesus struggled with His sacrifice. That time of sin fully upon Him was unthinkable. The pressure was the most extreme pressure that anyone could bear.
Think about it, you know how sin feels, don’t you? Can you imagine carrying the load of all sin and having your father leave you alone to deal with it.
Luke 22:44 says that in His great anguish His sweat was like drops of blood.
Can you see how much Christ loves you? Do you realize the price the Father paid to allow you to be free from your sin? It is crazy! Even before you were able to know Him, even before you rebelled against Him, He paid the price so that you could be saved.
The Bible says that you deserved to die because of your sin. Yet, this is how God showed His love for us while we are in our sin; while we were still sinning He sent Jesus to save us. He didn’t asked you first if you loved Him or if you trust Him. NO, he died for you before you had a chance to do anything in return.
I get excited when I think about this radical and crazy love that God has for us, and so did the apostle Paul. Look what Paul says...
Saul was Murder of Christians!
Saul, who through Jesus was changed to Paul, says this in light of this Crazy act of Love:
“To know this love that surpasses knowledge, now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever!”
Saul accepted the love of Christ and was changed, and the church was changed for Christ’s glory!
Some of you need that same type of change today! Will you accepted that love from Christ to make it happen today? Feb.13, 2011, The Love Weekend of the year. Will you be changed by Christ and the love He has so freely offered?
Too often people are led to believe that this is all just too good to be true. Its all just a little too crazy for them to trust. Even if He wanted to, Jesus couldn’t have the ability and power to deal with so many sins.” Oh, REALLY?
The Bible makes it clear that nothing that was created, nothing what was made came into existence without the power and authority of Christ. All that was made came from Him, He is the light, and in Him was and always will be life.
So, do you realize what He was done? Have you considered what He has made? If you doubt His power just stop for a moment and ponder all He has done.
Have you ever considered our planet, our solar system, and even bigger yet, our Milky Way Galaxy? It is amazing!
For years it was thought that there was only one Galaxy because it seemed to be larger than we could really grasp.
Then in recent years, science developed the Hubble Telescope. Just a few years ago they estimated Galaxies numbered around 80 billion; then the estimate was increased to 350 Billion, and today, a new German supercomputer calculated all of the data again and estimated there are likely over 500 billion galaxies.
We didn’t know that before ..., but God did. He knew from the moment He spoke it into being. That is how amazing and awesome our God is. Why did He create all of it? I think, for one reason, it was so we could know just how amazing He is. Secondly He probably enjoys it.
Consider this, In one square mile in the amazon jungle ... how many different types of trees there are. Over 3000! Why? Because God is an amazing God who spoke it into being.
Or, how many of you enjoy laughter?
[Clip of laughing babies]
Consider how God allowed us to have so many different kinds of Laughter that can make us laugh just hearing them.
God Created so many things that are amazing because He is amazing, and is showing us He desires a relationship with us. He did not do all of this because He thought we would be perfect, but because He loves us and desires us to know and love Him.
What is it going to take for God to get your attention? HE LOVES YOU! HE DIED FOR YOU!
God created each of you to know Him and be Loved by Him.
Will you accept His Crazy Love? Will you allow His Son, Jesus, to save you from your sin and give you life through His sacrifice on the cross?
Could today be the day you are changed? Could Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011 be the day you fully receive God’s love and give you your life to Jesus? If it is...
READ 2 Corinthians 5:16-22
Some of you need to let Feb. 13 2011 be the day of NEW CREATION.
God wants you to get past yourself and go out and share this love and ministry of reconciliation.
WE ARE THEREFORE CHRIST’S AMBASSADORS
God can do it all, but He chooses to use us to share His love with others. That is our main mission at HCC, to share God’s loves with all people everywhere, in whatever way we can.
What do you do with someone who loves you enough to die for you so that you may be free?
It’s Feb. 13 2011, your life is short.
What do you do when you realize you were fearfully and wonderfully made by God, and you blew it, and sinned? Yet, even before you sinned, even before you had a chance to know Him, Jesus knew all the things you would ever do and He died for you!
What do you do with that?
Accept it and allow it to change you so that you can help change others to His love.
Brooke Bronkowski did. At the age of 12 she wrote these words after accepting the Love of God into her life.
“I'll live my life to the fullest. I'll be happy. I'll brighten up. I will be more joyful than I have ever been. I will be kind to others. I will loosen up. I will tell others about Christ. I will go on adventures and change the world. I will be bold and not change who I really am. I will have no troubles but instead help others with their troubles.
You see, I'll be one of those people who live to be history makers at a young age. Oh, I have moments, good and bad, but I will wipe away the bad and only remember the good. In fact that's all I remember, just good moments, nothing in between, just living my life to the fullest. I'll be one of those people who go somewhere with a mission, an awesome plan, a world-changing plan, and nothing will hold me back. I'll set an example for others, I will pray for direction.
I have my life before me. I will give others the joy I have and God will give me more joy. I will do everything God tells me to do. I will follow the footsteps of God. I will do my best!!!”
This was a little girl with a big heart that was on fire for the Lord. She was so on fire and so changed by God’s love she wanted to share it. She started a Bible Study at her Junior High School, and saved her babysitting money to buy Bibles for her unsaved friends.... When she was 14 years old she died in a car accident... Her life on earth ended when she was so very young - but the impact her life had did not!
Close to 1500 people attended Brooke's memorial service and those who spoke talked of the example she gave others.. the pure joy she had for her God... During the memorial the pastor invited those who wanted to know Jesus and his love like Brooke did to come forward. Close to two hundred (200) students were on their knees at the front of the church praying for salvation... Ushers gave a Bible to each one of these teens - they were Bibles that Brooke had kept in her garage in hopes of giving out to her unsaved friends that she had bought... In that one day, the memorial of Brooke's life here on earth, Brooke's testimony led more people to the Lord than most people ever will....
Brooke lived her life faithfully to Christ - a very short life here on Earth. But her life was not wasted.....
Can you see the urgency in her words. ‘I will be a history maker, not when others think I am ready or not when I am older or not even tomorrow; no, right now,’ she committed to follow in the footsteps of the Lord ‘today.’ She committed to doing her best right then and there.
Don’t wait until tomorrow, because tomorrow may never come.
Right now is the time to choose to accept the crazy love of Jesus and accept the responsibility to be His ambassador.
1 Peter 3:18
Some of you are sitting here today realizing for the first time these passages are talking about you. You have realized that your sin took Christ to the Cross. As crazy as that may seem, as much as you may want to try and ignore it, its true. God loves you so much He sent His son to die for you so that you could be saved. Talk about a love that leads to crazy actions!!!
Will you accept it today? Make a crazy move and respond today..., you will not regret it! For you may never get another chance.
The Watts family understands this all too well. Stanley Watts, of Stelle, became trapped between two train cars near the old Roper building this past Tuesday which led to his death. Stanley was a loving father, a man of great faith in Christ,. I am sure he thought he would be in church today with his family and church family here in Herscher at the Methodist church, but He is no longer with us. No matter how great of a man Stanley was, the only thing that saved Him from hell is faith in the love that Jesus has for him, and that Jesus died so He might live.
We may never meet here again ...... Have you accepted Christ’s Crazy Love for you? Have you been saved from your sin by His sacrifice on the Cross? Is there anything that you need to put into His hands before your last breath?
